Indian common line blue is distributed throughout peninsular India from the outer Himalayas to Travancore, avoiding the desert tracts; the Andamans and Nicobars; extending into the Malayan Sub-region to the Philippines. It is widely distributed throughout is common all year round in NEERI campus mainly in forested areas but less common in cultivated lands and home gardens.

It flies over forest paths and gravel roads and is usually found in groups. It is fond of bird droppings and scat.

Male is a small butterfly with an upper side being grayish or orangish brown and even a purplish sheen and heavily speckled depending on the form having extremely variable appearance both the size and color. Its upper side is unmarked. The undersides vary from gray to pale yellow with many specimens showing intermediate shades of brown. The tail is black tipped with white. Underside is brown, brownish or pale dull brown. Female blue is confined to the base of the wings and is surrounded by varying shades of dark brown. Underside of the wings is variable, but the yellow form does not occur without tails. Specimens of grey form sometimes do occur without tails.
