Little Ironweed

Vernonia cinerea (L.)



Botanical name : Vernonia cinerea (L.).
Common Name : Little ironweed / Sandri
Family : Asteraceae
Synonym : Coryza cinerea
About : Terrestrial, annual erect herb grows upto 30cm. Taproot white or brown. Stems rounded, solid, hairy. Stipules absent. Leaves alternate spiral, elliptic, more than 2 cm long/wide, margin coarsely dentate, apex acute, base acute, pinnately veined. Flowers are bisexual, grouped together in a terminal head, with tubular flowers only, sessile, white or purple. Fruit are Achene, pappus present. Flowering and fruiting goes on throughout the year. Reproduction happens through seeds. Found near roadsides, open waste places, dry grassy sites and in plantations of perennial crops. Used in the treatment of stomachache and diarrhea.
