MANGO

Mangifera indica L.




Botanical name : Mangifera indica L.
Synonym : Mangifera domestica Gaertn.
Vernacular name : Mango/Aam
Family : Anacardiaceae
About the Tree : Mango is native to southern Asia, especially eastern India, Burma, and the Andaman Islands. They are fast growing erect trees with slender to broad and rounded upright canopy that can be used for landscape and shade.
Height : 15-30 m
Bark : Grayish brown or occasionally quite dark rough bark with shallow fistures, breaking off in thick irregular scabby plates.
Leaf : 10-30cm long slender the leaves are large and leathery,oval in shape and borne on longish stalks with a thickening at the base. They crowd round the ends of the branches in all directions. New leaves are copper-tinted and drooping
Flower : The inflorescence is a much-branched panicle bearing many very small (4 mm) greenish white or pinkish flowers. Both male and bisexual flowers are borne on the same tree. The flowers are radially symmetrical, and usually have 5 petals, streaked with red, Polygamous, there is usually only 1 fertile stamen per flower; the 4 other stamens are sterile. The flower has a conspicuous 5-lobed disk between the petals and stamens.
Fruits : Irregularly egg-shaped and slightly compressed fleshy drupe, 8-12 (-30) cm long, attached at the broadest end on a pendulous stalk. Skin smooth greenish-yellow, sometimes tinged with red. Season : From January to March the long, upstanding pyramids of flowers appear beyond the leaves. The normal fruiting period of Mangoes is from May to July.
