PSYCHE

(Leptosia nina (Fabricius))

Family Pieridae

Yellows and Whites

Psyche is the Greek word for soul. It's also the Greek word for butterfly. Psyche can be seen roaming around grassy patches and roadsides of NEERI campus.

The Psyche (Leptosia nina) is a small butterfly found in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. The upper forewing has a black spot on a mainly white background. The flight is weak and erratic and the body of the butterfly bobs up and down as it beats its wings. They fly low over the grass with feeble wing beats and the butterfly leaves the ground level not even the knee levels. It keeps itself to scrub. At rest forewings of Psyche are folded behind protectively marked hind wings, concealing the conspicuous black spot.

Wingspan of psyche is 35-50 mm and it's status is common and both sexes are white on upper. Upper forewing with black apex and large black discal spot. Under hind wing streaked with fine greenish lines. Larva feeds on Cleome viscose, Capparis and Crataeva plants.
