SMALL BRANDED SWIFT

(Pelopidas mathias (Fabricius))

Family Hesperiidae

Skippers

Also known as the Small Branded Swift, Lesser Millet Skipper, or the Black Branded Swift, Pelopidas mathias is a species of skipper (Hesperiidae) which is found throughout much of Southeast and East Asia, occurring as far as Japan and the Philippines. It is considered a pest to rice-growing cultures because its larvae are notably voracious in eating young rice seedlings.

Wingspan is 32-38 mm. Small branded swift is commonest in the group. Prefers a variety of habitats. Frequently settles on the ground to bask or to feed on flowers. Active throughout the day but more active during early mornings and evenings. Known to migrate locally and can be seen on wings from March to November in suitable habitats.

On the upper side, the wings are brown, greenish at the base. There are white post-discal hyaline spots in spaces 2-4, 6-8 and two cell spots in the forewing. The male has a narrow oblique brand in the forewing running from the spot in space 2 towards the dorsum (the brand is angled in such a way that a line drawn from and through the two cell spots would intersect it). The female has additional white spots in spaces 1b, consisting of one minute upper spot and one larger lower spot. On the underside, the wings are pale brown with a greyish tone. The forewing have the same spots as one the upper side, and the hind wing has a cell spot and post-discal spots in space 2 to 5.
